Abstract

Background: Heat stress is one of the hazard factors in the workplace. Metal industry workers in Hadipolo Village, Kudus Regency are workers who are often exposed to the heat stress, because at the production process that used fire, so that caused a high temperature in the work place. One of the effect of heat stress is the forming of urine crystals. The purpose of
this study was to determine the factors associated with the forming of urine crystals in Hadipolo Village metal industry workers. Method: This analytic study with cross-sectional design, involved 73 workers using total sampling in accordance with the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data of urine crystal was identified using a microscope (urine routine laboratory examination), measurement of heat stress using the EXTECH HT30 Heat Stress WBGT Meter, work period, water consumption, disease history, and exercise habits collected through interviews using a questionnaire. Statistical tests is using Chi Square and multivariate logistic regresion. Results: About 35 people (62.5%) was positive in urine crystal, workers exposed to heat stress more than 29ºC as many as 51 people (91.1%),
workers  who had a long work periode (more than 5 years) of  36 people ( 64.3%), water consumption less than 8 glasses (2000cc) 41 people (73.2%), workers with a history of risk diseases there are 6 people (8.2%), and workers who have exercise habits 23 people (31,5%). p value chi square test results that the relation between heat stress with urine crystal  is 0.005, p value working period is 0.021, water consumption is 0,000, disease history is 0.413, and exercise habits is 0.002. Only work periode and exercise habits were included in the multivariate analysis with p values is 0.02 each. Odds Ratio (OR) of work period  3,537 and OR of exercise habits is 3,626. Conclusion: There was a associated between heat stress,
work period, water consumption and exercise habits with the urine crystals, there was no associated between the history of disease with urine crystals. Exercise habits are the most dominant variable in the incidence of urine crystals.
Keywords: crystal urine, heat stress, work period, water consumption, exercise habits.
