Abstract

Refrigerator is commonly designed under constant load conditions and
compressor power consumption in spite of  the real condition of usage pattern can affect the cooling load and power consumption. The study evaluated the pattern of opening and closing the refrigerator door to cause the infiltration of hot air from outside of refrigerator cabin. The experiment was conducted to observe the refrigerator of peridiocally opening during 5 and 10 minutes for openging duration of 10 seconds. The result shown that for door openings with a 5 minutes period, the cabin temperature is higher than 10-minutes period, i.e. the cabin temperature average are 6.75 o C and 6.10 o C respectively. The power consumption at the door opening frequency of 5 minutes for 3 hours giving a higher amount of energy that is equal to 245.1 Watt-hour, while the frequency of door openings with an interval of 10 minutes gives a lower amount of energy
that is equal to 219.5 Watt-hour. For 5 minute period opening has higher
energy consumption because the system rarely cut-off more often than 10
minutes period.

Keywords: Refrigerator, infiltration load, door opening, system performance, energy consumption.
