Perbedaan Akumulasi Plak Pengguna Ortodontik Cekat Berkumur Khlorheksidin 0,2% dan Mengunyah Permen Karet Xylitol pada Mahasiswa Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang

Abstract


Introduction: an orthodontic appliance is a tool used in orthodontic treatment for repairing uncommon arrangement of teeth. The fixed orthodontic appliance component includes brackets, arch wires and other components. The components have complex forms which make plaques adhered to teeth easily and difficult to cleaned. It is necessary to make prevention by controlling the plaques one of which is by using chemical way such as gargling with chlorhexidine and masticating xylitol gum. The purpose of this research is to know different plaques accumulation on the users of fixed orthodontic who gargle 0.2% chlorhexidine and who masticate xylitol gum on The University of Muhammadiyah Semarang students.

Methods: This study used quasi experiment with the non-equivalen group design research plan. the samples collecting done with purpose sampling technique obtained 45 students which were divided into three treatment groups they are chlorhexidine, xylitol, and controlling group and each of those contained 15 respondents. The data analysis used Anova One Way test and Post Hoc Bonferronisignificant difference test.

Result: treatment on 0.2 % chlorhexidine resulted in 34.04% average index of plaques with the category of moderate. Treatment on xylitol gum resulted in 53.20% average index of plaques with the category of severe. Treatment of water resulted in 72.03% average index of plaques with the category of severe. The result of Anova One Way test showed the value of p=0.000 (p<0.05) which means there were differences of plaques accumulation on fixed orthodontic user who gargled with 0.2% chlorhexidine liquid and who masticated xylitol gum.

Conclusion: there is different plaques accumulation on the users of fixed orthodontic who gargle 0.2% chlorhexidine and who masticate xylitol gum on The University of Muhammadiyah Semarang students.
